WINDOWS 10 END OF LIFE - HOW SAFE IS IT TO USE AS OUTDATED OPERATING SYSTEM?
Using an outdated operating system is like driving a car that has an engine light on that you’re choosing to ignore. You might get by for a while, but the risks are constantly increasing - whether you know it or not.
Come October, Windows 10 will no longer receive support. No security updates, technical fixes or software updates. If you're considering staying put, you need to understand exactly what you're exposing yourself to.
What Happens When Windows 10 Is No Longer Supported?
Your Windows 10 devices will continue to work, but on an unsupported operating system (OS).
In the long run, using an outdated operating system (or software) can open up new security gaps that attackers will exploit to infiltrate your device, its data and network. This is concerning for Windows 10 users, especially considering that 43% of businesses reported a cyber breach or attack in the last 12 months.

What Are the Risks of Running an Outdated OS?
Security Vulnerabilities Will Grow
Without patches or security updates, vulnerabilities will remain unaddressed, so the chances of attackers targeting you with malware and ransomware increase by the day.
Windows 10 still has over 53% market share compared to 43% for Windows 11 (as of May 2025). This market share has decreased since last year (68%), but with it remaining large, cyber criminals will increasingly target Windows 10 vulnerabilities as it’ll be worth the payoff. Essentially, you’re a sitting duck in a very crowded pond.
Once attackers gain unauthorised access, your data and network will be at risk. This could lead to a data breach, which will cost your reputation, customers’ trust and finances.
Limited Software Compatibility
Third-party software providers will no longer provide software updates compatible with Windows 10. This means you’ll be using an outdated OS and software, which increases security risks and performance problems.
If you have a Microsoft 365 subscription, your apps will also lose support after Windows 10 reaches end of support. This is part of Microsoft’s ‘Modern Lifecycle Policy’, which requires users to ‘stay current as per the servicing and system requirements for the product or service.’
Increased Performance Issues
It’s a given that devices will experience performance problems once they become outdated. Your device may become slower, struggling to run newer applications that require more processing power and memory.
If an attacker compromises your system, you may experience significant downtime that will halt your operations.
Privacy and Compliance Violations
Highly regulated industries like healthcare and finance have strict compliance requirements when handling data security and privacy. Laws such as the UK GDPR and Data Protection Act (2018) require the use of appropriate technical controls to keep data safe.
Using an outdated OS, like the soon-to-be Windows 10, can violate these requirements, as it puts personal data in a vulnerable environment. If breached, you risk substantial non-compliance fines.
